river grape, Vitis riparia, Lenawee Co., MI

I will often try to present the unusual and overlooked. Grape flowers are probably more often smelled than seen. They have a sweet Welches-like aroma. The corollas drop away as the flowers open, leaving naked stamens and pistils. From tip to tip, the flowers are about 1/4 inch across. River grape grows wherever it can clamber over other plants to reach sun. This is one of our largest vines. I once read of one in pioneer times that was so large it provided firewood for the entire winter. The fruit is edible, but you wouldn't really want to.
