Rocky Mountain iris, Iris missouriensis

The most important thing in wildflower photography is finding them. For this one, I slogged across a muddy area by a low reservoir. Next most important is light. You rarely use direct light, because you won't get good detail and texture. In this case, the iris is somewhat backlit. the sun is shinning through the flower toward my left. The shadows and contrast make it more interesting. Occurs in damp sites in AZ, CA, CO, ID, MN, MT, ND, NE, NM, NV, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY, AB, and BC. Nationally threatened in Canada. Park Co CO, 6/19/13
