hybrid lobelia, Lobelia x speciosa

Ives Road Preserve is a favorite place. I work with an wonderful group of volunteers removing invasive shrubs. One day on a break, our birder extraordinaire Sam mentioned that he saw a fuchsia colored lobelia. I was immediately excited, because there was only one thing it could be. The image above is the only plant of its kind ever recorded in Michigan. It occurs rarely across the common range of its parents, blue lobelia and cardinal flower, in CO, IN, IL, MI, MO, NE, OK, and ON. Lenawee Co MI, 9/16/11
