showy lady-slipper, Cypripedium reginae

This is one of Americas largest orchids. There's not much a photographer can do for this one but let it show itself off. The first time I saw this was in a bog in West Virginia when I was about 8 years old. On that outing, my 5 year old sister stepped off the boardwalk and sank in the mud up to her waist. At age 8, that was one of the greatest things I had seen my sister do. I still think that's one of the reasons for my fondness of bogs. It grows in acid or basic wetlands in AR, CT, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and SK. Lenawee Co MI, 6/11/11
