great laurel, Rhododendron maximum

Yesterday I watched three squirrels make their way across the back of the lot. They all took different routes, but never touched the ground. There was a hillside near my childhood home in West Virginia that was covered by these rhododendrons. We could climb one at the top, and get to the bottom without touching the ground. I suppose we were a lot more like squirrels than Tarzans. I remember the flowers being uniformly pink. On the trip when I took this image I only saw white ones or ones with a little pink like this. I've now learned that light colored varieties are common.
