common trillium, Trillium grandiflorum

What would a wildflower site be without this? Common trillium is perhaps the most recognized and popular of native flowers. It's protected in Michigan because if you pick them you kill the plant. It's the floral emblem of Ontario, and there it is illegal to damage the plants in any way. Shooting trillium is the wildflower photographer's version of fish in a barrel, but you've just got to do it. It grows in woodlands in AL, CT, DE, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME(E), MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NY(V), OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NS, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 4/23/10
