bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Are scientific names Latin or Greek? Uva-ursi is Latin for bear grape. Arctostaphylos is Greek for bear grape. In response to yesterday's image, Anne mentioned that most flowers in this family are vase shaped. Up til now I had only shown ones that are more open. This is also called kinnikinnik. It was one ingredient of kinnikinnik, a herbal mixture ritually smoked by Indians. This is a shrub that runs along the ground, sending up short flowering branches. The flowers are about 3/8 inch long. It's range is much the same as yesterday's plant. It grows in open sandy or rocky areas in AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, IA(E), ID, IL(E), IN(R), MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NV, NY, OH(X), OR, PA(X), RI, SD, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY, AB, BC, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, NT, NU, ON, PE, QC, SK, YT, GL, and SPM.
