common evening-primrose, Oenothera biennis

Evening-primrose flowers open in the evening and last into the early part of the next day. They are one of my favorites because I really enjoy puzzles. Identifying these plants is a perennial puzzle. The lumpers and splitters continually fued over this. For some there is one large and varied species. For others, there are a number of separate species. And in any case, it can be tricky to determine which ones you've got. Fortunately, the inch and a half flowers are always pretty. But don't sleep in or you'll miss them. Growing in open areas in all states except AK, AZ, CO, HI, ID, UT, WY, and in AB, BC, NB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and SK. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 8/28/15
