calypso, Calypso bulbosa

This orchid is a favorite of many wildflower photographers. Soon after I went digital, I drove north in search of it. When I found it I also found another photographer out there in the woods. When he introduced himself, I immediately recognized the name. He was one of the most generous contributors to Michigan Flora Online. I've always gotten a kick out of our first meeting, out in the northern woods, both of us a couple hundred miles from home. C. Pierce and R. W. Smith, way out in the woods but very much at home. Calypso grows in northern coniferous areas around the world. In North America it is in AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, ME, MI(T), MN, MT, NH(E), NM, NY(E), OR, SD, UT, VT(T), WA, WI(T), WY, AB, BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, NT, NU, ON, PE, QC, and SK. Emmet Co MI, 6/1/11
