swamp thistle, Cirsium muticum

Wait a while and you never know what might flutter by. I was all set to take the shot of the thistle, and a tiger swallowtail arrived. Actually, you don't have to wait long for a pollinator to arrive. Thistles employ generalized pollination syndrome, which is a botanist's fancy way of saying they just don't care what does it. With thistles, you almost have to chase the bugs away. This species occurs in wetlands in AL, AR(T), CT, DE, Fl, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK(V), and SPM.
