dwarf ginseng, Panax trifolius

Spring fever time. It's going down to twelve degrees tonight. I can't wait to see some spring ephemerals. They're called that because they bloom early, and die back early. By the time leaves are out, their flowers are finishing. Dwarf ginseng is one of those. This pretty little thing only gets about four or five inches tall, with flower heads a little over a half inch. You can see them, often in patches, in spring woods in CT, DE, GA, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NS, ON, PE, and QC.
