Today's random selection inspires me to do an about face. No talk of threatened species today. This is a weed. It's official. And thank you to Nathan at the local USDA office, for generously helping me find my way through their information. Weed listings are similar to threatened listings, but with very different effect. Weeds may be noxious, pernicious, or restricted. Those labels determine the level of the effort to prevent their growth where they don't belong. This one was in a demonstration plot for agricultural students, so they could learn about the things on their hit lists. It grows in damp open areas, and sneaks into croplands in AL, AR, CO, DE, FL, GA, IL, IA, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, OH, OK, PA, SC. SD, TN, TX, VA, WI, and WV.
