American water-horehound, Lycopus americanus

These pretty little flowers are not much more than 1/8 inch across. The overall effect is not much more than a yawn, unless you get this close. Water-horehound is a close relative of mint, but has no aroma. The juice of the plant produces a black dye. It grows in mostly open wetlands in every state except HI and NV, and in AB, BC, LB, MB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and SK. Lenawee Co MI, 8/9/11
