black maple, Acer nigrum

I took this image yesterday while working with the volunteer crew at Ives Fen Preserve. We were weeding a skunk cabbage patch. The skunk weeders are certainly the most exclusive group I'll ever belong to. Debate continues among botanists about black maple. It may or may not be sufficiently different from sugar maple to be a separate species. It shares all the useful traits of its relative. It grows in AL, AR, CT(S), DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA(S), MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH(T), NJ, NY, OH, PA, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, ON, and QC(L). Lenawee Co MI, 4/29/30.
