bur-cucumber, Sicyos angulatus

You've heard of artistic license. It applies to photographers too. This is actually an ugly little thing. But if you get it in the right light, at the right angle, it becomes strangely interesting. At least it does to me. When I first saw it, I assumed the projecting structure was the pistil. It's actually the stamens, fused together. The flower is 1/2-3/4 inch across. Bur-cucumber is an annual vine growing in damp open areas. It grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 8/29/11.
