chicory, Cichorium intybus

This is the one that introduces the summer roadside show to me. Their true blue is a beautiful counterpoint among all the yellows and pinks. Classic chicory has been meaningful throughout history. Long before mocha and hazel, it was a coffee additive. The leaves and flowers are used much like cabbage. And unlike too many herbal remedies, chicory really works. It is a genuine anthelmintic. Normally, I wouldn't use a long word like that, but this time we'll call it good at that. Chicory now grows in every state except HI and AK, and in AB, BC, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK, and on SPM. Lenawee Co MI, 7/22/10.
