sharpleaf valerian, Valeriana acutiloba
Native valerians in the east are mostly restricted to fens. In the west they are less particular, more widespread, but still like to have damp feet. In the western mountains wetlands abound. Wherever there is a slope, there is runoff. In the east we are used to seeing seep and wet ground at the bottom of slopes. That happens in the Rockies too. Creeks and ponds abound, with wet margins. High meadows tend to be damp because things just don't dry out as well. And beaver ponds are a wildflower hunter' s friend. My waterproof hiking boots are omnipresent out there. This species is common in damp ground in AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, SD, UT, WA, and WY. Summit Co CO, 6/19/13.
