Indian paintbrush, Castilleja coccinea

Nature tries out everything. With paintbrush, she took a couple paths less travelled. The bright red parts are adapted leaves. The actual flowers are the yellow, or often greenish beaked tubes that tend to hide among the bracts. And these plants are partly parasitic. Indian paintbrush grows in open, sometimes damp ground in AL, AR, CT(E), DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY(E), LA, MA, MD(E), ME(X), MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY(E), OH, OK, PA, RI(X), SC, TN, VA, WI, WV, MB, NB, ON, and SK(E).
