water purslane, Ludwigia palustris
For water purslane, we return to the swamps. It grows in shallow water. Unlike its showier relatives, it has no petals. I have found no mention of it being used for anything. Most Ludwigias have four large yellow petals, like yesterday's longleaf primrosewillow. But this nondescript little plant may be the most successful of them all. It grows in temperate and tropical zones all over the world. Here, it grows in every state except AK, CO, MT, ND, NV, SD, UT, and WY, and in BC, NB, NS, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 7/31/12.
