fringed polygala, Polygala paucifolia

This little plant is also called gay wings, which certainly captures the spirit of the moment we find them. They are common in woods, but seem to me to be kind of shy. They don't like to be disturbed, and are mostly seen in places that have not recently seen human activity. In Michigan, that means up north. The plants have small scalelike leaves along the stem, with larger leaves and flowers only at the end. Gay wings alight in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IL, IN(E), KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, AB, MB, NB, NF, ON, QC, and SK(V). Headlands Park, Emmet Co MI, 5/27/12.
