Today I will be leading a Michigan Botany Club outing at Watkins Lake State Park. This is a new park, presently of about 1100 acres, and hopefully expanding. It includes an unusual array of habitats, ranging from forested to open, wet to dry, and acid to basic. It may all be a little wet today, since it's currently raining. Flat-top aster is a plant we will see. It likes acid or basic, but not neutral, slightly damp areas. The Potawatomi used this in witchcraft to ward off evil spirits. Formerly in the aster genus. It grows in AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, AB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK, and on SPM. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 9/9/10.
