yellow thistle, Cirsium horridulum

Those of us in Michigan are used to seeing pink/purple thistles that all look vaguely alike. As you travel away from here, thistles become ever more interesting. Cream or white flowers are frequent, and growth forms vary. Yellow thistle can't quite decide which group to belong to. Purple forms are as common as this, and completely white flowers also occur. If you're braver than a cow, and not scared away by thistle's weapons, you will be rewarded by their beauty. This species grows in AL, AR, CT(E), DE, FL, GA, LA, MD, ME, MS, NC, NH(E)(, NJ, NY, OK, PA(E), RI(T), SC, TN, TX, VA, and south to Nicaragua. Morton Co GA, 3/15/16.
