California poppy, Eschscholzia californica

California poppy is a plant of Mediterranean climates, according to Wikipedia. In any case, when it finds a place it likes it thrives. We've all seen those images of fields full of poppies in southern California. With human help it has found many new homes outside our southwest. It is particularly happy in middle earth climates in the southern hemisphere, where it now spans the globe. California poppies really like Chile, where they produce larger plants with more flowers than normal. Meanwhile back at home, it has been displaced from large parts of its native range by invasive species, particularly grasses. California poppies have now been reported from AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, GA, HI, ID, IL, KY, LA, MA, MI, MO, NC, NE, NH, NM, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI, WY, AB, BC, MB, NS, ON, and PE.
