largeleaf jointweed, Polygonella macrophylla

Jointweeds are are a mostly southern group in the knotweed family. Not one of the showier bunches, but they serve. Probably the best known member is buckwheat. Their most important function is repopulation. Largeleaf jointweed, like many of its relatives, grows in poorly watered and barren places. Places often disturbed by humans, or historically by fire. As life returns to such places you will almost always find jointweeds or their relatives. This one grows on sandy barrens in AL and FL(T). Polk Co FL, 10/26/15.
