European white birch, Betula pendula

Yesterday's Adrian Symphony concert included Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony. The major theme in the last movement is from a Russian folk song about a birch tree. They wind up making Grandpa a balalaika from it. This Grandpa will just let it grow and look forward to when it blooms in the spring. The species does get involved in European folklore. Ever wonder what the switches used in a Finnish sauna come from? I didn't either. But here you go! This is the national tree of Finland. These trees are now established in CO, CT, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, ME, MI, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, VA, VT, WA, WI, BC, MB, NB, NS, ON, PE, and Australia. Beal Gardens, MSU, 5/3/13.
