Kalm's St.-John's-wort, Hypericum kalmianum

This plant is wonderfully beautiful in full bloom. For me, it was also an early adventure in wildflower discovery. The first time I saw it on a northern Michigan lakeshore, I was amazed. But puzzled. I soon figured out it was a woody St. John's-wort, one of two we had at that time in Michigan. The quick key to the species is the number of divisions of the ovary or capsule. With five, it had to be Kalm's. Getting out in the wild, finding this stuff, and puzzling it out! The whole deal is just so much fun. Why isn't everybody out there walking around in a wildflower daze? I suppose it's OK that they're not. It could look like a scene out of the Walking Dead. Kalm's grows in IL(E), IN, MI, NY, OH(T), WI, ON, and QC(L). Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 6/28/11.
