fragrant water lily, Nymphaea odorata
I've spent years trying to come up with a creative and different image of a water lily. Waded around in a lot of ponds. But why get creative? Water lilies are absolutely beautiful without any help. I did get to smell a lot of them, which is in itself worth getting wet. With all their relatively disorganized flower parts, it has long been believed that these were an early arrival in plant evolution. Modern cytologic studies have confirmed that this order of plants is the second most primitive. But they have also revealed that water lilies themselves are a newer branch of that tree. Other genera of this order, with many fewer petals and such, are actually the more primitive. Fragrant water lilies grow in every state except HI, ND, and WY, in BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC(E), and south to South America. Lenawee Co MI, 7/20/11.
