alternateleaf dogwood, Cornus alternifolia

Turning east toward the Preserve that Sunday, I came to a stand of alternateleaf dogwood. This is my second favorite dogwood. The trees may get slightly larger than flowering dogwood. Lacking the white bracts, the flowers aren't as showy. But they have the longest filaments, giving them a somewhat fuzzy appearance. Another flower that rewards a close look! They are an understory and border tree in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL(E), GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, and on SPM.
