multiflora rose, Rosa multiflora

This member of murderer's row also believes in torture. Just ask anyone in a crew that's tried to remove it. You had better approach it well armored. Multiflora is another one of those wonderful introductions recommended by USDA. It's great for farm hedgerows to control wind erosion. The berries are good wildlife food, even edible by humans. It makes good small game shelter. The flowers are pretty and fragrant. And the rootstocks are the best grafts for hybrid roses. It also forms the most godawful thickets you can imagine. I can easily picture this around Sleeping Beauty's castle. Our volunteer knights that fight with it have shed a lot of blood. It has now been reported from every state except AK, AZ, HI, ID, MT, ND, NV, SD, and WY, and is in BC, NB, NF, NS, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 6/6/11.
