shooting star columbine, Aquilegia elegantula
This is more often called western red columbine, but shooting star is more fun. The red petals (actually sepals) sometimes spread laterally, giving it a more normal columbine look. I haven't seen enough of it to know if that is a difference among plants or happens as flowers age. A reader comment had me looking up red columbines from Colorado. It turns out there are three species, one of which he has here in his garden. Another image opportunity? This species grows in AZ, CO, NM, and UT. Ouray Co CO, 6/22/13.
