tall blue lettuce, Lactuca biennis

This really is tall blue lettuce, which often has blue flowers. Or flowers like this. Or even pure white flowers. But these strangely yellow ones are the most distinctive and interesting. And this really is lettuce. It's not the species we eat, but in a pinch it could be. Although you would have to be pinching me pretty hard to get me to eat it. The mature plants are very bitter, and the white sap wouldn't sit very well. These plants may grow to twice our height, and can be found in all kinds of dry ground. They're in all states except AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, HI, KS, LA, MO, MS, NE, NV, OK, SC, and TX, across Canada except for NT and NU, and on SPM. Lenawee Co MI, 8/8/10.
