dwarf crested iris, Iris cristata

This dwarf iris is very like dwarf lake iris. That plant is endemic to the northern Great Lakes. Crested iris is entirely south of the area of the last glaciation. Unlike yesterday's entry, these are eye catching, poisonous, and memorable, and were used medicinally. Hunters have also chewed the root as a thirst quencher. It's said to be sweet at first taste, then turns acrid. Interesting way to quench thirst, poisoning yourself! Dwarf crested iris grows in AL, AR. GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD(E), MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, PA(E), SC, TN, VA, and WV. Hidden Lake GArdens, Lenawee Co MI, 5/12/16.
