Apalachicola toadflax, Nuttallanthus floridana

Why has there been a fascination with plants named for toads? Or even the impulse to give them that name. Toad flax, toad shade, toad rush, toad lily; there are a number of them. For toadflax, it's been suggested that toad represents false. In early stages, these plants with small narrow leaves look like flax. But then they turn out to be useless. These quarter-inch flowers grow in scrubland in AL, FL, GA, and MS. Martin CO FL, 1/27/13.
