tanglehead, Heteropogon contortus
I've enjoyed wildflowers my whole life. But not grass. I was 34 before I started paying attention to it, other than to sneeze because of the pollen. Think of all I missed! Grasses are beautiful, and fascinating. To wit, tanglehead. The pinks and purples award a close look. And in the upper left you can see the bases of the awns, which can be up to 4 inches long. These awns twist and tangle with changes in humidity. Once the sharp pointed seeds are dropped, the twists literally screw the seeds into the round. Tanglehead is pan-tropical, here growing in AZ, CA, FL, HI, NM, and TX. Polk CO FL, 3/16/16.
