red oak, Quercus rubra

From a tiny acorn a mighty oak does grow. But what does the acorn grow from? These female flowers of red oak are hardly a eighth of a inch long. Once fertilized by the wind, they take two years to become mature acorns. That's typical of trees in the red oak group, other oaks only take a year. After that, the trees become impressively important to commerce, forests, and squirrels. And one of the best things is the one in the front yard that supports the grand kids' swing. Even now that they're teens, it's a good weather gathering place. Red oak grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 5/14/13.
