aspen fleabane, Erigeron speciosus

Aspen fleabane is one of the larger and showier of the many fleabanes. We don't get treated to the full effect of fleabanes here in the East. Out west, it seems there's a different one every time you turn around. Or every time you climb a different mountain. With all that rapidly changing habitat, it's easy for a plant to be isolated, and grow to be different from its relatives. All to delightful effect. Just in Colorado west of the divide, there are about 38 species. In Michigan there are seven. We are fleabane deprived. Aspen fleabane grows in intermediate mountain areas, often with aspen, in AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY, AB, and BC. Mesa Verde National Park, Montezuma Co CO, 6/22/13.
