scarlet globemallow, Sphaeralcea coccinea
Scarlet globemallow has flowers about an inch across, on plants up to about 18 inches. It grows in prairie and similar open habitat. There are large valleys extending north to south west of the Front Range in the Rockies. They're largely farmed, grazed, and built now, but you can still see plenty of these striking red-orange flowers along roads. These grow in AZ, CO, IA(T), ID, KS, MN, MT, ND, NE, NM, NV, OK, OR, SD, TX, UT, WY, AB, BC, MB, and SK. Sedgwick Co CO, 6/16/13.
