showy goldenrod, Solidago speciosa

Recently we looked at swamp candles. These goldenrods could well be called prairie candles. The shape of the inflorescence, pointing to the sky, gives them an almost unique aspect for a goldenrod. When you have a crowd of them like this, they put on a unrivaled show. They are at their very best, as here, in a year after their prairie has been burned. Showy goldenrod grows in AL, AR, CO, CT, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD(T), MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, WY, MB, and ON(T).
