Palmer's penstemon, Penstemon palmeri

Palmer's penstemon may be the prettiest of them all. And it certainly lives up to the sometimes common name of beardtongue. It's a great garden plant. This four foot tall plant has dense spikes of inch long flowers. How then could you miss it? Weber and Wittman's Colorado Flora does not include the species. They've done a remarkable job cataloging Colorado's plants. To do that, they examined all the specimens in herbarium collections that they could reasonably access. Apparently this species is very rare in herbariums. One of the growing gang of plant collectors needs to target this one. Start west of Durango in June! Palmer's penstemon grows in AZ, CA, CO, ID, NM, NV, UT, and WY. LaPlata Co CO, 6/23/13.
