Silktree is yet another plant with reactive leaves that fold when disturbed. It's also a great example of the pea family tribe that has forsaken petals. When we think of pea flowers, we first think of things like sweet peas, with those showy side petals and a forward looking keel. But with this group, the pollinator attraction job gets done with showy stamens. They work so well that they also attract gardeners, who have helped many of these species proliferate. Silktree is a native of east Asia, but now is found in many warmer areas around the world. Here it has been recorded in AL, AR, AZ, CA, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WV. Polk Co FL, 3/17/16.
