Sweet or English violets are one of the earliest spring bloomers. But their greatest claim to fame, many times getting them a shout out in literature, is their distinctive aroma. These have been used for centuries for aroma and flavor in cosmetics and condiments. It's been said that you can smell them once, but not again until much later. That has not been my experience. Sweet violet is weedy around the habitats of man in AZ, CA, CO, CT, GA, HI, ID, IL, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MT, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, TN, UT, VA, WA, WI, BC, NF, NS, ON, and in its native Europe.
