bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis
Bloodroot is just beginning to bloom here. They sure catch your eye if you happen upon a patch. The flowers are typically about an inch and a quarter across, but may be a little larger, or a lot smaller. Patches of dozens of flowers are not too unusual. So look, but don't touch. Prolonged exposure to the red sap can cause blistering or even scarring. Bloodroot grows in woodlands in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY(V), OH, OK, PA, RI(S), SC, SD, TN, VA, WI, WV, MB, NB, NS, ON, and QC.
