Ozark witchhazel, Hamamelis vernalis

Ozark witchhazel has a much more limited range than common witchhazel, but at the same time a much wider one. It occurs wild only in AR, MO, OK, and TX. But it is hardy as far north as southern Canada, and can be seen in plantings almost anywhere. This shrub blooms in very early spring, unlike the autumn blooming common witchhazel. These flowers are more colorful, but the strange strap-like petals have the same shape. Hidden Lake Gardens, Lenawee Co MI, 4/8/18.
