Dutchman's breeches are true spring ephemerals. They pop early, quickly produce their fascinating flowers, and by the time the tree leaves are appearing, breeches are seeding, then gone. They are bumblebee pollinated, so I guess they get up early too. It takes a strong bee to force its way into the opening between those small yellow lobes to reach for the nectar in the breeches' legs. Dutchmen grow in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, MB, NB, NS, ON, PE, and QC.
