prickly gooseberry, Ribes cynosbati

Prickly gooseberry is not a flower that will catch your eye and get you to pull off the road for a picture. These flowers are not much more than a quarter inch long, and not particularly fragrant. Whatever it is that attracts pollinators is a bit mysterious. The berries are also unappealing, greenish and prickly and kind of dry. What is it that eats these? Apparently not everything in Eden is meant to appeal to human senses. Prickly gooseberry grows in woods in AL, AR, CT, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 4/28/17.
