prairie phlox, Phlox pilosa

Prairie or downy phlox grow in fields and open woods. The plants are around 18 inches, with flowers about three quarters of an inch across. This is the typical color, but white flowers also occur. The Meskwaki Tribe used prairie phlox to make a love medicine. That citation didn't say whether it was to cause it or to cure it. Prairie phlox grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD(E), MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NJ(E), NY(E), OH, OK, PA(E), SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV, MB, and ON. Jackson Co MI, 5/18/11.
