wild yam, Dioscorea villosa

Wild yam is a member of the family Dioscoreaceae. Unlike its African relative, it does not produce edible tubers. These are the female flowers, about 3/8 inch long. Male flowers are on separate vines. Wild yam grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, and ON.
