wood sage, Teucrium canadense
Wood sage grows up to about three feet, in woods and along their edges. The flowers are about a third inch high. Capturing the beauty of flowers is a little like faces. Some are most intriguing from the front, some in profile, some more difficult. These have been difficult. Getting closer has never seemed to pay off. Maybe I've never gotten to know wood sage well enough to capture its true spirit. But when I do I suspect it will involve the profile, with that lip sticking out. Like it's saying, "Hey, you want some of my stuff? Come and get me!" Long-tongued pollinators do land on the lip. You can imagine the rest. Wood sage grows in every state except AK and HI, and in BC, MB, NB, NS, ON, PE, QC, and SK(T). Ives Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 7/23/11.
