water smartweed, Persicaria amphibia

Water smartweed, an apt name for one of the cleverest plants around. It has learned to grow in so many styles and places. It grows in water, creating patches of pink spikes. The stems sprawl under the water. The showy flowers beckon you to sprawl with them right down there in the water and muck to get a close look. The plant also marches right up the bank, and can grow as impressive bushy patches, upright on ground you couldn't get muddy on if you tried. Water smartweed is native to North America, Eurasia and Africa, and has been introduced in many other places. Here it grows in every state and province except AL, FL, GA, and HI, and on SPM.
