eastern cottonwood, Populus deltoides

It's cottonwood season again! Just swept all that fuzz out of the garage. How come something that flies through the air like that is so sticky? What fun, pulling it off the broom. Does carrying those sticky bracts with them help the seeds stay put and take root once they land? Cottonwood was originally a tree of bottomlands and shores, where erosion could create the clear soil they need to root. Now man is clearing things for them, and expanding the habitat. Come and get us, cottonwoods! Shown here is a close look at the male catkins before the anthers split open to release pollen. Cottonwood grows in every state except AK, CA, HI, ID, NV, OR, and WA, and in AB, BC, NB, ON, QC, and SK. Ives Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 5/2/11.
